NW Kids offers students and recent grads hands-on experience in print and web publication. Internships are available in both editorial and design.

Editorial & New Media Internship Overview
The role of the editorial & new media intern is to support the editorial team and assist with both day-to-day editorial and new media operations and special projects. In return, the intern gets hands-on experience in helping produce and distribute a monthly print magazine and ongoing online content publishing. The editorial staff at NW Kids is quite small so the intern will play a valuable role on the team.

Responsibilities
- Assist with developmental editing of feature articles
- Research and write features in the monthly magazine
- Evaluate queries and present recommendations to editorial staff
- Manage the NW Kids Twitter, Facebook, and Yelp accounts
- Make sure content on the NW Kids website is accurate and up-to-date
- Create a regular blog round-up
- Assist with new media strategic planning
- Maintain a working knowledge of social networking sites and web-based technology
- Research and compile monthly calendar entries
- Proofread and fact-check articles
- Support editorial director and other staff as needed
Skills
- Working knowledge of social media; knowledge of Adobe InDesign and PhotoShop a plus
- Working knowledge of blog and social networking technology; knowledge of Drupal a plus
- Copyediting and proofreading; familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style guidelines
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Fact checking
Compensation
This is an unpaid position. Students are encouraged to work toward class credit allowed by school.
Schedule
Interns are expected to come in to the office at least one morning a week; schedule is flexible and can easily be structured around school and other jobs. The intern should be able to work at least 12 hours per week. The majority of the work will be offsite; no computer is provided for this job.
Interns must be available for proofreading at the end of the editorial / production cycle (this may require evening or weekend work). Duration 3–6 months. Interns will work on several issues of the print edition and multiple edition of the newsletters. Exceptions can be made if necessary and feasible.

Design & Production Internship Overview
The role of the design intern is to support the editorial and design teams. In return, the intern gets hands-on experience in helping with the production of a print magazine. The editorial and design staff at NW Kids is small; the intern will play a valuable role on the team and will end the internship with tangible contributions to their portfolios.
Who should apply
Graphic design students with a strong interest in print (vs. web) production should apply. We encourage people from all backgrounds to apply.
Responsibilities
- Image research, acquisition, and pre-press
- Illustration commission (depending on experience)
- File Archiving
- Creating mock-ups
- Layout & Design (magazine, ads, collateral, and marketing materials)
- Typesetting (magazine) and inputting editorial corrections
- Cover concepting
- Miscellaneous support to art director and other staff as needed
- Attendance at monthly design staff meeting
Skills
- Understand the fundamentals of typesetting (e.g., leading, kerning, soft vs. hard return, etc.)
- Working knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Design education (in process or finished) or equivalent work experience
Compensation
This is an unpaid position. Students are encouraged to work toward class credit allowed by school. Schedule Interns are expected to work at minimum 15 – 20 hours per month, most of it offsite. NW Kids will not furnish interns with computers or software, so interns should have access to recent versions of the Adobe suite. Most of the production occurs at the third week of the month; other than that, we can work around your schedule for the most part. Duration 3–6 months. Exceptions can be made if necessary and feasible.
