Camille Rynd, founder, The Kids Marching Band
By Camille Rynd The Kids Marching Band was inspired by my little friends, Cyan and Eve (4 and 3) in our living room last winter, as they marched happily around making music and mayhem. Soon my imagination took off, and before I knew it, I was envisioning many children, decked out in their favorite costumes, making music, dancing and twirling! I love music, dance and art and thought I could share that with the kids, and perhaps even inspire them to take up an instrument. I find that most children are willing to really celebrate and enjoy themselves and I want to be a part of that. I like the idea that our children may never be told that they should be seen and not heard. I like to hear their little voices and listen to their music. So, I decided to put this thing together to see what came of it, and so far, it’s a smashing success. We have even been invited to march for the Hands to Hearts International event at Jamison Square on Peace Day! The children attend a full dress practice once a month on the last Monday from 3:30-4:30 at Jamison Square, and they march on First Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 to kick off the street fair, also from Jamison Square. They wear costumes, play instruments, and sing a version of the Ants Go Marching, that I customized the lyrics to match our situation. On our debut night, we marched once through the first half of the street fair. My goal is for us to make it a little further each month until we can go the whole length of the fair. If you want more information about The Kids Marching Band you can show up to practice at Jamison Square, or email Thekidsmarchingband@yahoo.com.
